Photo shot by Thorge Berger becomes the face of Rautenstrauch-Joest Museum’s Theme Day “Pilgern” (Pilgrimage)

As the “face” of “Pilgrimage”, a themed one day event on February 19, 2017, at the  Rautenstrauch-Joest Museum (Cologne, Germany), one of my Sadhu Portraits was chosen. This Theme Day is part of the Special Exhibition “Pilgrimages”, on display from October 8, 2016 until April 9, 2017.

I shot this particular motive some time ago, in March 2010, at an Ashram situated on the banks of the Ganges in Haridwar (India), while I was visiting a “Kumbh Mela” festival for the first time, back then with with Steve McCurry. The “Kumbh Mela” festival is the biggest pilgrimage festival in the world.
I remember how we found this place at the entrance of the Ashram, where we had beautiful light, and so we decided on this spot for taking a series of portraits. Actually, the one shot that subsequently was chosen  is my personal favorite, too. So, I am proud and happy that this photo eventually evolved as the face of the Theme Day!

Over the course of the last six years, I visited three more “Kumbh Mela” festivals in India, and from this rich material created a multimedia live presentation which successfully premiered during the “Pilgern” Theme Day.
